I have a word for those doing business in Africa in the old-fashioned way, and today I will look at those involved in the #cocoa_business.
Africa is responsible for more than 75% of the world's cocoa, and countries like #Ghana and IvoryCoast contribute more than 60% of it.
According to Trend Economy (https://trendeconomy.com/), the following countries import the biggest portion of African cocoa: the #Netherlands, the #USA, #Germany, #France, and #Belgium.
As far as I know, cocoa #cultivation in Africa is dependent on Western importers. I want to state here clearly that Western importers too depend on cocoa cultivation in Africa because cocoa is well developed in the tropics. (Story for another day.)
Now let's come down to my point. The above-mentioned importing countries of cocoa have more cocoa #transformation units as they produce many cocoa-related products, notably #chocolates, #biscuits, etc., that are being sold #worldwide.
Cocoa is the primary raw material, so they need cocoa to be in business, and they need Africa to be in business. This brings me to local production, not just transformation.
Cocoa product producers would gain more and stay longer in business if they were to do production in Africa and only #export #finished #products.
#Producers fail to understand critical issues in production and kill their businesses.
The source of your raw material is very important, and local production not only reduces the cost of production but also makes you understand the local producers and work with them better, hence making them see you as a partner and not just a buyer.
Farmers would do more to supply cocoa if they were to know and witness the process from cocoa to finished products.
