THE DECLINE OF MANCHESTER UNITED: A TALE OF MISMANAGEMENT AND MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

It’s glaringly obvious that the owners of Manchester United are more focused on profits than the passion and legacy of the game. Their decisions continue to show a lack of commitment to the football that once made the club a global powerhouse.

At a time when the team was desperately trying to rediscover the spirit of Manchester United—the spirit we all knew and loved—the owners made a critical mistake by sidelining Sir Alex Ferguson. 

His unparalleled experience and influence could have been instrumental in rebuilding the team and mentoring new managers during this transitional period.

Instead, what followed was a series of missteps that further eroded the team’s identity. The lack of the traditional "United spirit" is palpable on the pitch. 

After Erik ten Hag’s departure, many fans hoped that Ruud van Nistelrooy, a man with the club’s DNA, would be given the opportunity to lead. His tenure as interim manager during four matches showed promise, and he appeared to have the potential to restore the team’s lost energy and winning mentality.

Sadly, this was yet another missed opportunity. Instead of entrusting van Nistelrooy with the task, the owners opted for Reuben Amorim—a talented manager, no doubt, but someone whose philosophy and experience seemed misaligned with the club’s needs at such a critical juncture. Predictably, his appointment has led to struggles, further highlighting the owners’ lack of a coherent vision for the team’s future.

It’s disheartening to see that the owners appear to have no intention of returning Manchester United to its winning ways. What once was a club defined by ambition, grit, and a never-say-die attitude now feels like a shadow of its former self, led by decisions driven more by business than the love of football.

Manchester United deserves better—better leadership, better decision-making, and a renewed commitment to the game that made the club legendary. It’s high time the owners re-evaluated their priorities, or risk losing the trust and faith of the loyal fanbase forever.
